It is popularly thought that the Labrador Retriever originated on the coast of Newfoundland where fishermen were seen to use a dog of similar appearance to retrieve fish.An excellent water dog, his weather-resistant coat and unique tail, likened to that of an otter because of its shape, emphasise this trait.Comparatively speaking, the Labrador is not a very old breed, its breed club having been formed in 1916 and the Yellow Labrador Club having been founded in 1925. It was in field trialling that the Labrador found early fame, having been originally introduced to these shores in the late 1800s by Col Peter Hawker and the Earl of Malmesbury.It was a dog called Malmesbury Tramp which was described by Lorna, Countess Howe as one of the ‘tap roots’ of the modern Labrador.

Intelligent, keen and biddable, with a strong will to please.He has the tendency to gain weights, hence it is important to look carefully after his diet.He needs to spend time outside with his human to feel happy.

E' credenza popolare che il Labrador Retriever sia originario delle coste della Groenlandia dove si era visto che i pescatori usavano un cane simile per recuperare il pesce.È un eccellente cane da acqua, e il suo mantello resistente alle intemperie e la coda unica, paragonabile a quella di una lontra per la sua forma, ne enfatizzano le caratteristiche.Relativamente parlando, il Labrador non è una razza molto antica, dato che il suo Club si era formato nel 1916 e lo “Yellow Labrador Club” fu fondato nel 1925. Fu nelle prove su campo che il Labrador cominciò a farsi conoscere,; era stato originariamente portato su questi lidi da Col Peter Hawker e dal Conte di Malmesbury negli ultimi anni del 1800. Era un cane chiamato Malmesbury Tramp che venne descritto da Lornam contessa Howe, come una delle “fondamentali radici” del moderno Labrador.
Dal suo nome si evince che sia nato come cane da caccia, ed ancora oggi viene utilizzato per questa attività.Per le caratteristiche del pelo veniva spesso usato nella caccia alla palude, o per recuperare le reti e gli strumenti di lavoro che cadevano in acqua.Per il suo carattere viene spesso usato come cane da compagnia, per la pet therapy o nella ricerca e primo soccorso.Tende ad ingrassare, per cui è importante tenere a stretto controllo la sua alimentazione.Ha bisogno di lunghe passeggiate per sentirsi felice.

Di costruzione robusta, compatto, molto attivo; (il che esclude eccessivo peso corporeo o sostanza); cranio largo; torace e cassa toracica larghi e alti; rene e posteriore larghi e forti.

COMPORTAMENTO - CARATTERE

Di buon temperamento, molto agile.Fiuto eccellente, presa morbida, grande passione per l’acqua.Compagno devoto, che sa adattarsi. Intelligente, appassionato e disponibile, con gran desiderio di essere gradito.Di natura gentile, non è mai aggressivo o inopportunamente timido.
