The ancestors of the modern American Staffordshire Terrier hail from England and were a mix between Bulldogs and Terrier breeds. Their mixed heritage earned them many names, including Bull-And-Terrier Dog, Pit Bull Terrier, and Half and Half. Eventually, they came to be known as Staffordshire Bull Terriers. These dogs were used by butchers to manage bulls, hunters to bring down wild boars, and farmers to help with farm work and act as ratters and family companions because they were so affectionate to humans. Later, they were used in the barbaric sports of bull-baiting and bear-baiting due to their tenacity, courage, and muscular build. When these blood sports were eventually outlawed, they were used in dog fighting rings, which sadly continues in illegal events to this day. It is because of their misuse by humans that they carry their reputation as an aggressive breed. Around 1850, many of these dogs made their way to America. They started to become known as American Pit Bull Terriers, Pit Bull Terriers, American Bull Terriers, and Yankee Terriers. Around the turn of the 20th century, they were recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) as American Pit Bull Terriers.
AmStaffs are intelligent dogs—they understand cues well and are very trainable. However, due to their size and quickness, they require a handler who keeps them mentally and physically stimulated. Be sure to provide your American Staffordshire terrier ample opportunities for enrichment and the chance to enjoy training, exercise, and games that put their brain—and body—to work. This is not a breed that will be happy with just a short walk around the block or one training class in their life. It's also for this reason that first-time owners might want to look elsewhere.

GENERAL APPEARANCE

The Staffordshire Terrier should give the impression of great strength for his size; a well put together dog, muscular, but agile and graceful, keenly alive to his surroundings.He should be stocky, not long-legged or racy in outline. His courage is proverbial.

Le origini dell’American Staffordshire Terrier (abbreviato in Amstaff) nasce dagli incroci tra cani di tipo molossoide e di tipo terrier, creati in Inghilterra per il bull baiting (combattimento di cani contro tori).Tra il secondo e il terzo decennio dell'Ottocento le autorità inglesi misero fuorilegge questi combattimenti che passarono nella clandestinità, trasformandosi in incontri fra soli cani (dog fighting). Questa pessima pratica venne esportata contestualmente alla colonizzazione degli inglesi del nord America, e da qui deriva il nome American Pittbull terrier.Nel 1884 venne costituito l'American Kennel Club (AKC) per la tutela delle razze canine pure, che chiese di cambiare il nome alla razza, sostituendo il termine Pit (arena) con Staffordshire terrier.La selezione dell'Amstaff venne improntata sull'eleganza e l'appariscenza, divenendo un cane da compagnia per il carattere docile e da esposizione per la bellezza.
L’American Staffordshire Terrier è un cane incredibilmente dolce, equilibrato, amante dei bambini e degli anziani, tanto da essere utilizzato spesso nella pet theraphy.Per le sue origini resta comunque un cane che necessita di attenzioni, di trascorrere molto tempo con un padrone attivo che ne sappia gestire il carattere e le necessità.E’ un cane equilibrato, consapevole della sua forza, e di conseguenza non risulta aggressivo nei confronti delle altre razze. Diventa invece protettivo nel momento in cui la sua famiglia è in pericolo, dimostrandosi un guerriero impavido e coraggioso.

ASPETTO GENERALE

Lo Staffordshire Terrier dovrebbe dare l’impressione di grande forza per la sua taglia; un cane ben costruito, muscoloso ma agile e di belle linee, molto attento.Dovrebbe essere robusto, non alto sugli arti, né troppo snello. Il suo coraggio è proverbiale.
